Gust commits to Ohio State University

David Gust was supposed to be a Fargo Force prospect, not a leading offensive threat. A midseason call-up from the affiliate list changed the course of fate for the Force and certainly for Gust.

The 5-foot-9, 168 pound forward committed to Ohio State University this afternoon, after receiving interest from several Division I clubs according to chief scout Jesse Davis.

The trip from Orland Park, Ill., where Gust is from, to Columbus, Ohio is just under six hours according to mapquest.com. That’s roughly half of the near 11-hour trip from Orland Park to Fargo. That should allow Gust’s family to attend plenty of games while David plays for the Buckeyes.

Gust was electric after being put on the Force roster for good a third of the way through the season. He scored 30 points in 43 games and gave head coach John Marks a great offensive option on a line with Gust, Gabe Guertler (Minnesota), and Alex Iafallo (UMD). The trio grabbed 90 points last season, compared to 146 scored by the “top line” of Austin Farley (UMD), Bryn Chyzyk (UND), and Colton Hargrove (Western Michigan).

When opposing teams put the clamps down on Farley-Hargrove-Chyzyk in the playoffs, Gust and his linemates shined. Gust had two points in six playoff games, compared to just two total points for the top line combined.

Gust’s style of play is just as appealing as the production. He is a gritty forward that plays much bigger than his frame would suggest. He is willing to battle in the corners and play in both ends of the rink.

When he has the puck, he shows tremendous hands, great passing ability, and a lightning quick shot. The 18-year-old has all the tools to be Fargo’s go-to forward for the 2012-13 season. With the entire line expected to return, Gust, Guertler, and Iafallo will all be leaned on for offensive numbers.

Ohio State adds a great piece to an already deep recruiting class that includes players like Zach Stepan from Shattuck-St. Mary’s and NTDP’s Collin Olson.

Gust is expected to be with the Force this weekend at its camp in the Twin Cities.

He is set to join Ohio State in 2014 and will be the second former Force player to play for the Buckeyes. The other was Alex Lippincott, who scored 15 points in 2009-10 with Fargo.
